Only David Byrne could mastermind this surprising fusion of pop music and swirling pop ceremony. Byrne is joined on stage in Brooklyn by ten elite color guard teams from across the US and Canada in a mesmerizing music and dance concert. The complex marching sequences with twirling flags and wooden rifles are accompanied by live performances from Byrne, Nelly Furtado, How to Dress Well, Devonté Hynes, Money Mark + Ad-Rock, Zola Jesus, Lucius, St. Vincent, and tUnE-yArDs. The musicians perform songs specifically written for the routines.
The young, diverse garders, usually relegated to parades or half-time shows at sports arenas, strut their stuff with gusto. In between sets, the backstage conversations and interviews conducted by This American Life‘s Ira Glass perfectly capture the teams’ infectious camaraderie and enthusiasm.
“Some documentaries set out to heal the world, while others succeed in making it a better place by the mere fact of their existence.”
